This might be revealing my inner geek, but if you've seen the Red Wedding (Game of Thrones) do you remember how the bride and groom were carried away to their wedding chambers. There's also the whole bunch of English Royalty history TV dramas where something similar happens. So, where did this idea of the garter come from?
The garter was originally devised to protect the bride from the wedding guests. In France, brides would fear the end of the wedding ceremony because guests would fight their way to the bride to get a piece of her dress. It apparently was good luck. Weddings would conclude with a scared and tearful bride in torn rags.
The garter came about to pacify guests by tossing the garter. Reference
I guess it makes sense now why guys go a little crazy when the garter is tossed...
